The 2023 programme started with a Centenary Symposium and reception, which was held at the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock on Thursday 13 June 2023. On Friday 6 September 2023, our AGM took place at New College, Oxford, the location of the society's inaugural meeting in 1919. Also in the Autumn, our 2023 volume "The Parish in Wartime : Bishop Gore's Visitations of Oxfordshire 1914 and 1918", edited by Mark Smith, was published. Then, on Tuesday 11 February 2023, we moved into our second century with a special joint lecture by Professor Mark Bailey on manorial records. This was organised jointly with the Oxfordshire Architectural and Historical Society.
The society aims to publish a volume a year. The volumes appear in hard covers, and are carefully prepared by specialists in their subject. Each volume contains a substantial historical introduction to the edited text and a full index. One copy is issued free of charge to each member - both individual members and institutional subscribers.
TO JOIN US: the society welcomes new subscribers whose support is essential to continuing our work into the next hundred years. Besides the satisfaction of supporting the publication of Oxfordshire’s historical records, subscribers receive a copy of our annual volumes and may attend the AGM and events. A membership form can be downloaded by clicking on "Membership (Personal)" on the left of this page.
Suggestions for future volumes are most welcome, please contact the Hon General Secretary.
Within these pages you can access full details of the range of the society's publications and activities. We welcome all enquiries for membership from those individuals or institutions with an interest in the history of Oxfordshire.

edited by the late Fr Jerome BertramInscriptions made in the mediaeval city and university of Oxford have come down to us in many forms and types of material - stone, glass, wood, metal, paint, ceramics - even textiles. There are a variety of handwriting styles, and inscriptions were written in Latin, French, or English. Some can be seen in their original context, such as the church or chapel as the donor intended; others have been moved to new locations, often in order to protect and conserve them; others yet survive only in the notes and drawings of long-deceased antiquaries. Now, for the first time, the richness and variety of mediaeval Oxford’s epigraphy are revealed in this comprehensive catalogue of inscriptions from the twelfth century to the mid-sixteenth. Each entry includes the type of artefact, the dimensions where known, the materials and type of lettering, a description, the text of the inscription (with a translation of non-English text), a commentary and references to previous notices. There is a full scholarly introduction, a selection of illustrations, and a series of indices to facilitate use of the catalogue. This is the first part of a two-volume work, the second of which covers the epigraphy of the mediaeval county of Oxfordshire.
The Volume will comprise a :-
